VELscope Oral Cancer Screening

Prevention is critical to achieving optimal oral health, and the detection of oral cancer is certainly not an exception.  More than 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, and one person dies from this terrible disease every hour of every day.

In patients where their oral cancer is detected in the early stages, there is a 5-year survival rate of 83%.  However, most patients do not detect the cancer until the later stages, and the resulting survival rate drops to about 50%.

With these facts in mind, Dr. Altizer and his team has made the commitment to integrate preventive oral cancer screening into every hygiene appointment.  And, we are proud to utilize the VELscope Oral Cancer Screening device along with our traditional head and neck exams.  It does not require any dyes, and it does not require prolonged testing.  Usually, we get the results within two minutes.

Many aspects of dentistry are elective and open to preferences.  Oral cancer screening is not.  The “blue light” emitted from the VELscope wand is a sign that we take your long-term, oral health very seriously.
